After her vocal studies at the Conservatory, she began to research the folklore of her native island, Sardinia. For many years she travelled across the Sardinia visiting the remotest mountain villages to learn the old songs and the styles of traditional singing. She gathered immense knowledge, at the same time she worked together with many jazz musicians as Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava, Lester Bowie and Don Cherry. More important though, Elena has become the most important living Sardinian singer. Her record sales in Sardinia compare with major international pop stars. It is no exaggeration when the renowned newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes that "Elena Ledda could play a similar role for the Mediterranean region as Mercedes Sosa plays for South America."
