Groove Lélé a été créé par les enfants de Granmoun Lélé (surnommé « Pépé Dynamite »), musicien emblématique du maloya, musique sacrée, axée essentiellement sur les voix et les percussions. Musiques et chants de révolte des esclaves et de leurs descendants, le maloya fut longtemps joué dans la clandestinité car associé aux indépendantistes. Décédé en 2004 à l'âge de 74 ans, Granmoun Lélé a composé plus de 200 chansons, réalisé plusieurs cds de chants de transe et fondé sa propre église. Très populaire sur l'Ile de la Réunion, il a joué dans le monde entier accompagné par les membres de sa famille. Ce sont quatre de ses enfants (Willy, Urbain, Marie-Claude et Béatrice) qui après la mort du Patriarche, ont décidé de continuer l'aventure avec le groupe Groove Lélé, qui a reçu récemment une des plus hautes distinctions musicales de la Réunion, le prix Alain Peters 2008. En octobre 2009 le maloya est déclaré patrimoine immatériel de l'Humanité par l'Unesco . Groove Lélé, reconnu désormais comme l'un des groupes phare du maloya, continue de transmettre l'héritage musical familial dans le même état d'esprit tout en nourrissant sa curiosité de découverte et de partage.

A la croisée du jazz et de la musique contemporaine, Ernst Reijseger est un innovateur incontournable du monde de la musique improvisé. Il joue avec une maîtrise rarement égalée et a une approche originale de la pratique de son instrument : tour à tour guitare ou percussion, le violoncelle occupe ainsi une place innovante. Ses deux albums en solo (à dix ans d'écart) pour le label Winter&Winter témoignent d'une réelle virtuosité au service de l'improvisation. Passionné par les cultures traditionnelles, Ernst est habitué aux rencontres avec toutes les musiques. Sa discographie (importante) pour Winter&Winter confirme cette diversité d'approche : “Colla Voche“ (Winter&Winter 1999), avec le choeur polyphonique sarde des Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei, “Janna“, (Winter&Winter 2003) avec le chanteur sénégalais Mola Sylla, et, bien sûr “Requiem for a dying planet“, le projet croisé avec les Cuncordu e Tenore de Orosei et Mola Sylla, autour des musiques qu'Ernst Reijseger a composées pour deux films de Werner Herzog, projet devenu auhourd'hui un ciné concert.

In the deepest south of Italy, there is an area called Salento where tambourines play a very ancient rhythm named Pizzica. This is the music that, until 1960's, was used to heal Taranta's (a venomous spider) bite. Still today, the population plays and dances Pizzica during the village festival. This music has charmed all the people who, passing through this country, have heard it – also musicians, like Joe Zawinul and Stewart Copeland (The Police's legendary drummer), descended on Salento attending to “La Notte della Taranta” Festival. In fact, the meeting with Pizzica has never left indifferent, because the persistent crescendo of tambourines' beats goes straight to heart. Hearing and dancing Pizzica, one could disclose unknown aspects of the self and summon all extraordinary natural energy. A millenary deposited energy that is “reopened” during the performance.

Officina Zoè is probably the most known musical group of Pizzica. They have recorded five albums : “Terra”, “Sangue vivo”, “Il Miracolo”, “Crita” and “Live in Tokio”. And they have been present at several international festivals : Druga Godba (Lubiana), Respect Festival (Prague), London Film Festival, Stimmen Voices (Lorrach), Cantigas do Majo (Lisbon), Voix de Femmes (Bruxelles). The band was also selected for showcase at the Womex 2000 in Berlin. Officina Zoè was born in the spring of 1993 out of a group of musicians from Salento (a region in the deep south-east of Italy) with a common need to rediscover the traditional popular music of their own land. The music of Salento is the result of centuries of varied foreign domination, but more importantly, of exchanges with other Mediterranean cultures.

Officina Zoè's repertoire includes working songs, love songs in local dialect and in Salentian Greek, protest songs, and especially the Pizzica (sting) : from the heart and the dances of tarantism. This last rhythm is exciting, tormenting, inebriating, exhilarating, and deeply moving all at the same time. It is the sum of the rhythms of the heart and breath, the beat of the earth. It is impossible to remain indifferent, because the persistent crescendo of the tambourine “beats” goes straight to the heart. If the young black people from the urban ghettos narrate, with the help of rap, the poverty and the rage, the Salentinians, from time immemorial, express their feelings and passions by beating the tambourine and by dancing the pizzica, until they fall into a trance. Its purpose is not only expressive, but also communicative. It's a courting dance.

For this reason, beyond any interpretation, it is enough to listen to the music, to abandon oneself to its movement, to come up against this force, this uncommon musical energy. The rhythm of the Pizzica is of central and fundamental importance to the history of Officina Zoè. “Beating” the pizzica tambourine (“to beat” on the pizzica,or “sting”) represents a decisive, profound, and sometimes painful experience for the group. Through the joyful but tragic obsession of that movement, through the blood produced by the furious and unending repetition of percussion with the hand, the musicians find a difficult and surprising path of cultural possession, which is also the rediscovery of a submerged, forgotten identity.

For the group, their collaboration with the film director Edoardo Winspeare was decisive, and culminated in a full-length film,“Sangue Vivo”. Officina Zoè collaborated on the film, which was shot entirely in Salento, not only in the realisation of the soundtrack, but also as actors. The film Sangue Vivo enjoined great success and garnered awards in many film festivals like S. Sebastian, Montpellier, N.I.C.E. festival at New York, S. Francisco and Moscow, London Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Rotterdam, etc…. After “Sangue Vivo” the group composed the soundtrack of Edoardo Winspeare's film, “Il Miracolo”, showed at the Venice' Film Festival in 2004.

In the music world they are also notable for their extrardinary experience with the Italian DJ Ominostanco , with Don Moye (well known afro jazz exponent and talented drummer of the ArtEnsemble of Chicago) and with Baba Sissoko (a multi-instrumentalist of an international fame as well as a key representative of Mali music)

Thanks to Officina Zoe the Pizzica music and dance has become popular not only in Italy but also in the major European capitales European capitals. Its popularity has stretched further beyond Union borders, landing in the States (Los Angeles,1998), in Corea (Tour 2006 : Seoul and Nami Island) and even in Japan (Tour 2007 : Auditorium Tokyo, Auditorium Kyoto, Nagoya). The Tour in Japan has been captured on the live album "Live in Japan" recorded between Tokio and Kioto, wich contains their must celebrated pieces together with a few news songs. In July 2009 Polu Sud release in Italy the Officina Zoè's new album, “Maledetti Guai”, a mix of contemporary sounds and traditional style.
